A Martian's view

Had you landed from Mars, Earth today would seem like a mad house with Trump blasting hot air over there, Putin blasting anything in his way, Britain messing itself up by blasting Europe and Europe damaging its future stability by blasting Britain. And our roofs and gardens are being blasted by ferocious winds caused by our love affair with CO2, yet we carry on as normal, ignoring the various disasters we are running towards. What a world, you’d think.

Then you’d hone in on people and see that little acts of kindness kept everything rolling along, preventing gun battles blasting everything to bits. This week I had a rare altercation with somebody and we struggled to comprehend what was going on. Disaster was avoided by a desire to reach out, to find a solution through understanding and compromise; it took a while, but we got there.

Our human problems often have animal origins - body language, tone of voice and the subsequent emotion generated by brains trying to make sense of these raw messages. And minds filled with the electrical pulses of thought grappling with the animal mindsets the brain created. This Martian would see we are in denial, animals so disconnected from the world which nurtures us that collectively we destroy everything we tap. Cursed with the Midas touch, we make assumptions based on faulty premises and go round in circles, never learning from history, ploughing towards our own destruction.

Although Martian you would shudder at the result of The Polish Climate Talks, they’d recall those little acts of compromise, the reaching and kindness and know us ordinary Earthlings are capable of rising, shouting and acting in cohesion and returning to nature-related behaviour.

There we are, whatever the mess they got us in to, it is up to us to resolve it and together we know we can.

He winked at me as they rolled his bed away and I waved and smiled, concerned for him. We’d been joking about being on death row, that he preferred the boxing ring to the bed but look where it had got

Many of our problems arise from not trusting ourselves. That may sound rather esoteric, but consider this. We are animals who have evolved from apes which learned to walk, use tools, build substantial
